Preoperative Visit for Exploratory Laparoscopy
The patient is scheduled for laparoscopic surgery in 2-weeks. This is a preoperative assessment and preparation for surgery. This is a visit to determine whether the patient is fit for surgery. The patient is anxious about the procedure but wants to have it done. They will be traveling to the hospital with a family member.
Following the assessment, the learner should have discussed each of the following clearly with the patient assuring their understanding and allowing time for questions:
Note: Refer to the “TIPS Scale for Telehealth Communication Guidelines” prior to the visit, the SP will use this in scoring.
Timing: You will have 20 minutes to conduct the exam. You will receive a "5 minutes left" warning from the standardized patient.
Feedback: There will be verbal feedback with the standardized patient following the role-play.
